This week Christian Banners has donated our time and efforts to remodeling the classroom at Avonlea Acres in Battle Ground, Washington. Avonlea Acres is a Christian home for unwed mothers aged 18 – 26. This ministry takes in six girls who are either pregnant or have a newborn. These girls learn life skills and good parenting in a protective, healthy environment for a period of two years. The house is run by Rhoda and Tom Hilman. There are counselors for the girls, and a board of directors that manages the business side.
Over the summer Avonlea Acres moved to their new location. This house needed a lot of TLC to bring it back to its original glory. Many people volunteered to remodel bedrooms, living areas, bathrooms, and other rooms. We took on the classroom.
We started with painting the walls a warm gold color and then stenciled vines and some of the favorite sayings of the Avonlea program, like “Futures are more important than pasts” and “You can rise above your raisin’ “. The stenciled design was painted in a dark burgundy/purple and took about 16 hours to hand paint. My hand is still cramped in the shape of the paintbrush! The room came with the four large black bookshelves that we still need to fill with paper and crafting supplies.
We bought this great old 92 inch long Formica top table for the room that is almost indestructible. The girls will be able to paint and craft on this table to their hearts desire. The table came with six chairs that we painted black (we also painted the table legs) and then recovered the seats in a gold and black paisley. The curtain and table runner were made with what was left over from the chairs with some added black material.
The picture hanging on the closet wall was painted by a past resident in the home and was a perfect match for the room. The chandelier was donated by the SAFE Ministries in Battle Ground, Washington.
Avonlea Acres had an open house on Sunday, December 11, 2011 which was a great success! They are trying to complete their funding needed by having a FIVEBUCKS fundraiser. Please prayerfully consider helping this ministry by giving five dollars a month, here are the details.
We pray that Avonlea Acres will be blessed and bring glory to God in the changed lives that come as a result of this ministry.
